Community Service Highlights of the Junior League of Fort Myers
2005-06 | Strategic Plan visioning and SWOT analysis with Board, our members, and Community Advisory Board, by Deanne Kyle, President Elect. The Board of Directors retreat took place at Edison College on May 21, 2005. The Chair Training took place on June 4, 2005 at Edison College Center. With the opportunity to acquire the Langford Kingston Home from the City of Fort Myers, it was a busy year for the Board of Directors. The Community Advisory Board welcomed several new members and met in October, January and April. Deanne Kyle, President Elect, was responsible for communication, agenda and food. Two Provisional Classes were held this year and a total of 40 new members joined the League. Julie Workman, the JLFM webmaster, and Carole Ezell, JLFM PR Chair, worked to advance League’s website. They were instrumental in launching the first “members-only” section of our website. They established forums for member discussion. They also regularly updated the website to reflect League happenings. The Monday Morning Emails became a regular “post” on the website forum. Stacey Deffenbaugh and Sarah Stansberry took Gulf Glances to a new level. These ladies implemented the first electronic edition of our newsletter. The newsletter was posted on the website and emailed out to our members. This was a monumental task and these ladies made it look easy. The League continued as a participant in the State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) with Julie Workman serving as our representative. Danielle Emery, 2004-2005 SPAC Chair was elected to serve on the State SPAC Board. The Past President’s luncheon was held at The Flying Pig with Mary Lee Mann, Sandra Raak, Susan Kyle, Linda Uhler, Lou Pontius, and Kathleen Berlick in attendance. President, Shirley Snyder McLaren, gave a “State of the League” update and requested information and suggestions from the past presidents regarding issues of Gulf Glances (electronic vs. paper), the JLFM website, the Langford Kingston Home renovation and the idea of a Capital Campaign. Ruth Condit chaired the Sustainer Leadership Committee. Kim Hunt served as the Sustainer Advisor to the JLFM Board of Directors. The 23rd Annual Taste of the Town, with a new tagline “Party in the Park” was held on November 6 and was a great success. Chair Sandra Kaye Raak and Assistant Chair Gail Danis were awesome leaders of an outstanding team. A beautiful holiday social was held at the home of Cyndi Deragon and Jeff Mudgett. On March 29th the Fund Development Committee, chaired by Caryn Clark, hosted a wine benefit at Fresh Market, which was attended by over 250 people and raised $13,000 for the League’s endowment fund. The Helping Hands Committee, the Junior League Training and Resource Center Committee, The Renovation Committee, the Future Use and Planning Committee and the Project GAP each contributed great service to the community. The GAP committee began the year with a summer training with Vicki Lopez Lukis of the Junior League of Miami. The second training was held at the Lee County Department of Juvenile Justice on August 20, 2005. Both trainings were required for members to participate in this new project. Every member participating also had to submit a 20 page application along with fingerprints. Once approved by the FBI, many league members joined the committee members to implement this new program. The Junior League of Fort Myers is the FIRST Junior League to implement this project without the original GAP project being in place in a juvenile justice detention center. Since the JLFM implemented this program, several other Junior Leagues have voted in this project and will begin implementation in Fall 2006. During 2006, several members of the JLFM will be working with Vicki Lukis and GAP to assist the Lee County DJJ to implement a full GAP program. The League voted to take on one new project next year, the Disaster Response Team. This committee will provide relief supplies to Florida communities devastated by disaster, allow our League to be prepared to move quickly and effectively after a major disaster hits our community, and enhance and strengthen relationships with our non-profit community partners and foster relationships which enhance the awareness of the League’s presence in the community, and provide greater visibility and understanding of our mission. AJLI announced and implemented a new award system “Volunteer Service Awards”. This award program honors each members’ commitment to service in her league from April 1st – March 31st. Awards are classified in three categories: Bronze for 100-249 hours, Silver for 250-499 hours, and Gold for 500 + hours. The JLFM chose to participate in this program. Angela Brant, Membership Vice President, and Florence Crawford, Recording Secretary, were instrumental in implementing this program for the JLFM. This program is an on-line program, accessed by each league member. After logging in with a user ID and password, each member was able to enter her volunteer hours. At the end of the period (March 31, 2006) the hours were summarized and awards were ordered by Angela and Florence. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to any member that has contributed 4000+ hours during her league career. The Nominating and Placement Committee, chaired by Lisa Muench, offered a Placement Fair, in addition to the Placement Manual. The Annual Dinner Meeting was changed to an Annual Meeting celebrating the 2005-2006 League Year was held at The Edison-Ford Winter Estates in the museum. The evening began with a beautiful cocktail reception including delicious hors d’oeuvres and light jazz music. The evening included awards for Outstanding Sustainer (Annette Morroni), Outstanding Active (Anne Hansen), AJLI volunteer achievement awards, and awards honoring members with 5 years and 10 years of service. Ruth Condit and Kim Hunt inducted 9 members from Active Status to Sustainer Status. Past President Susan Kyle installed her daughter-in-law, Deanne Kyle as the 2006-2007 JLFM President. Deanne’s daughter, Erin Kyle, presented Deanne with her President’s flowers and the JLFM gavel. Susan also installed the remainder of the new 20062-007 Board of Directors.

2004-05 | At the beginning of the year we welcomed new Office Manager Natalie Strimel. The Board of Directors retreat took place on Useppa Island on 5/23. The Leadership Team Training took place on 6/4 at the Calusa Nature Center. With the opportunity to acquire the Langford Kingston Home from the City of Fort Myers, it was a busy summer. The Executive Committee reenacted the Headquarters Task Force as the Langford Kingston Task Force. Under the direction of Chair, Mary Snell, the Junior League submitted a proposal to the City on July 29. The proposal was developed which would have the League occupy the Home as the Junior League Training and Resource Center. Partnerships were forged with United Way and other community organizations. The City would later offer us a 99-year lease for the Home. In order to introduce the Home to the membership, a reception was planned for August 17. After two hurricanes, the reception was finally held on October 12. Coordinated by Terry Wallace and Amanda Heidt. Two Provisional Classes were held this year and a total of 34 new members joined the League. Julie Workman and Peggy Hummel worked with the League’s webmaster to launch phase one of the League’s new website. Anne Hansen took on Gulf Glances as a second placement. Monday Morning email was continued throughout the year and proved a valuable service to members. After sitting out for several years, the League again began participation in the State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) with Danielle Emery serving as our representative. By the end of the year, she was appointed to the Executive Committee of SPAC. At the October general business meeting, the membership voted in favor of the League accepting the Langford Kingston Home from the City if it was offered. Vicki Stephan hosted the Past President’s luncheon at University Grille on Oct. 22. Sustainer Nan Miller chaired the Sustainer Leadership Committee The 22nd Annual Taste of the Town, with a new tagline “Party in the Park” was held on November 7 and was a great success. Chair Deb Wilson and Assistant Chair Sandra Raak were awesome leaders of an outstanding team. A beautiful holiday social was held at the home of Cyndi Deragon and Jeff Mudgett. Sandy Stilwell hosted a lovely Holiday Social for Sustainers in her guesthouse on Captiva Island. Superintendent of the Southwest Regional Juvenile Detention Center, who shared with us the opportunity for the League to participate in Project GAP. On March 16 the Fund Development Committee, chaired by Deanne Kyle, hosted a wine benefit at Fresh Market, which was attended by over 400 people and raised $9,000 for the League’s endowment fund. The Helping Hands Committee, the Heights Foundation Committee, the Imaginarium Committee, the Project SAFE Committee and the Junior League Training Team all each contributed great service to the community. The League voted to take on the three new projects next year, all to focus on the Langford Kingston Home: The Junior League Training and Resource Center Committee, The Renovation Committee and the Future Use and Planning Committee. In addition the League will do Project GAP and Helping Hands. The Nominating and Placement Committee offered a Placement Fair, in addition to the Placement Manual. The Annual Dinner Meeting was held at Cin Cin Mediterranean Bar and Grille on May 17. Brandy Hand, former President of the Junior League of Orlando and former Chair of the AJLI Nominating Committee, was the guest speaker and she also installed the Nominating and Placement Committee. Past President Kathleen Williamson installed the incoming officers and Lou Pontius presented the Sustainer Community Service award to Sandy Stilwell. I was pleased to present the President’s Award to Mary Snell and the Right Arm Awards to Anne Hansen, Amanda Heidt and Terry Wallace.

2003-04 | Strategic Plan visioning and SWOT analysis with Board, our members, and Community Advisory Board. Mary Snell stepped in as Interim V.P., and presided over the planning discussions and revision process. We added guest presentations to our general meetings. The AJLI PR/Marketing Campaign was introduced to Board members via a PowerPoint slide presentation in February, and in March Board voted to adopt the new JL logo and tagline, retaining our traditional shell as a “watermark” on our stationery. Girls Making It On Purpose. We have been touched by mothers and wives who have seen their sons and husbands go off to war in support of our great nation--we reached out to them with a gift on Mother’s Day through Helping Hands. We have been touched by the needs of those suffering with cancer--we have reached out to sooth their pain with music, books Helping Hands and our Provisional Mural project at Lee Memorial Hospital Two Sustainers reach Emeritus Status, Meredith Clapp and Judith and Eleanor Foltz.
